This article provides a guide for Norwegian medical student looking for alternative options for studying medicine abroad if they can't secure a place in a medical university in Norway. In addition, we will mention available loans and grants available for the citizens of Norway.


Medicine is a very popular across Norwegian students. Over 3000 students study medicine in one of the four Norwegian Universities offering medicine - University of Oslo, University of Bergen, Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and University of Tromsø, and nearly as many young Norwegians study at medical schools abroad, most of which are in Poland and other European Union countries.

After completing the programme, it doesn't matter if you complete the degree in Norway or other EU country, you apply to the Norwegian Directorate of Health for authorization as a doctor. The process is exactly the same, so don't let the limited medical school places, to stop making your dreams to became a doctor or a dentist come true.

Lånekassen is the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund and provides support for educations in countries outside the Nordic region. Students from Norway with Norwegian citizenship are entitled to receive financial aid from Lånekassen for their medical study abroad. Some of the loan may be also converted to a grant. The deadline to apply for loans and grants for the academic year 2023–2024 are:

  • 15/11/2023 for the fall 2023,

  • 15/03/2024 for spring 2024.
